It’s only a larynx; demystifying MT & CCM
With Emma Trow

Sunday 5 November 2023

Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, 100 Renfrew Street, Glasgow

An exploration of contemporary vocal styles; how to understand the technical musical theatre and pop/rock vocal set ups and experiment with simple ways to achieve them in the studio. A creative and interactive guide to help open up new pathways to safe and vibrant modern singing.

Emma Trow found her singing voice in primary school and started a lifelong journey of discovery with both her own and other people’s noises. She trained as an opera singer at the Royal College of Music alongside her professional performance career in musical theatre.

Emma moved back to the north east to be with family after her training, and started to direct musical theatre productions and investigate the voice further to support her clients. Emma took her Masters in Musical Theatre at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Upon leaving she began teaching singing in a range of conservatoires in the south of England including GSA, Italia Conti, PPA, and Mountview. She also started her own theatre company, writing and performing political musical theatre productions.

Emma now has two children and lives in the Lake District. Since relocating she has worked at the Arden, RCS and now enjoys her role as a performing arts lecturer at Leeds Conservatoire. Research areas include the nervous system and the voice and neurodivergence and singing. Emma uses a range of pedagogies in her teaching but is especially inspired by the work of Hustler, Janice Chapman, Ron Morris, Linda Hutchison, Mary Saunders Barton and Jo Estill. Emma’s online work with her company Wholistic Vocal Support offers a place for performers at any stage of their career to focus on their craft and use Emma’s skills as a vocal coach, Pilates and yoga teacher to assist in finding their vocal expression and a lifelong vocal stamina.
