Description

Scotland Area Professional Development Day

Q&A with SQA and Teaching Teenagers

Sunday 16 February 2025
10.30am–4pm
Edinburgh Society of Musicians

Morning

Mandy Miller will help us understand the requirements and standards expected by SQA and good examination practice. She will offer a first-hand insight into the role of the Visiting Assessor and explain and demonstrate the assessment process for National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher Music. Mandy will share her thoughts on the role that music teachers can play to positively prepare their students to navigate their exam. This interactive presentation will also give you the opportunity to mark and discuss pre-recorded performances.

Mandy Miller

Mandy Miller has very recently retired after 37 years as Head of Music in Lochgelly High School and a total of 43 years teaching for Fife Council.

Mandy works enthusiastically at regional, national, and international level to further the cause of music making: Deputy Principal Assessor for Higher Music for The Scottish Qualifications Authority, Musical Director of Dunfermline Choral Union (32 years) and Administrator of The Fife Festival of Music. In 2005 Mandy founded Dunfermline Junior Chorus. The organisation has four choirs and a membership of young people aged 6 to 18 years. Members of DJC have experienced the thrill of performing in Carnegie Hall, New York and Dunfermline, the Royal Festival Hall, London and the Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow. A group of senior choristers performed for King Charles III and the Queen Consort in Dunfermline to celebrate City Status in October 2022.

Mandy is in great demand as a workshop practitioner in Choral Music Education and is an experienced teacher of choral conducting in UK, Ireland, Canada, and the USA. She has undertaken a Conducting/Teaching residency with the St Louis Children’s Choirs and Music Teachers in the St Louis district for the last 15 years.

Mandy has arrangements of Scottish songs published by international publishers Hal Leonard and Boosey & Hawkes. She continues to give thanks for a life richly blessed with music making and like-minded friends.

Afternoon

In the afternoon there will be a discussion and concert/masterclass given by students of some of the teachers with us. It is an opportunity to bring along a student of your own. If they are under 18 please make sure a parent/guardian is with them.
