Body Bias in the Vocal Studio
Sunday 26 January
4pm–5pm
Online
This brief introduction about body bias is an opportunity to consider how weight stigma impacts both teacher and student in and out of the vocal studio and to explore how societal expectations and attitudes about body size can make it difficult to remain consciously non-judgmental. You will be invited to reflect on your beliefs and values in relation to your own body and others’, giving you a chance to reflect on how you can become more curious and anti-oppressive in your work with students of all sizes.
About Jo Reader
Jo Reader is an experienced BACP person-centred accredited psychotherapist and clinical supervisor in private practice. This follows a first degree and first career in classroom music teacher and private piano teacher and a lifelong love of singing! As a result, she is passionate about helping women transform their mindset from shame to radical self-acceptance of their bodies. She delivers workshops to professionals about unconscious body bias, its origins, how it affects their work and how to attend to it sensitively and respectfully with clients. Jo undertook research in 2011 about weight stigma in therapy and published an article about it in Therapy Today in 2014.
