A Practical Approach to Teaching Contemporary Singers
With Heather Baker

Sunday 25 February 2024

Cygnet Theatre, Friars Gate, Exeter, EX2 4AZ

This highly interactive and practical day will be heavily inspired by the needs of the teachers attending. Questions will be asked at the start of the day about what participants find challenging about teaching contemporary singers and Heather will aim to cover as many of these concerns as she can throughout the day. Learn the theory behind why contemporary singing may differ to classical singing and delve into how this theory can be practically applied in the voice teaching studio. Participants should leave feeling empowered to work on contemporary vocals with their students and for themselves.

Heather Baker has studied vocal pedagogy for over 20 years, learning from many of the world’s greatest experts in the field and continuing to do so. She is a founding director of ‘The Institute for Vocal Advancement’ training singing teachers globally. Alongside her teacher training work, she runs a thriving teaching studio in Cheshire where her client list has included professional musicians, television personalities, signed artists, MOBO Award, Mercury Award and Malta Music Award Winners, Cruise entertainers and Broadway and West End performers. She lectured for two years on the Music course at LIPA and has travelled internationally delivering teacher training, workshops and lessons in Australia, Israel, USA, Malta, Romania, Austria and all over the UK.

In 2019 Heather delivered a TEDX talk on the Joy of Singing and in 2023 she completed an MA in Vocal Pedagogy presenting her Masters research at various academic conferences in the UK and Mexico. Heather is a highly effective and practical teacher who has a passion for sharing knowledge and continuing to learn.

For the afternoon, Heather will be leading a masterclass with 3 audience members. If you have ever wanted to learn to belt, or understand how CCM strategies feel to your students, then email jenna.brown@aotos.org.uk to express your interest in being a masterclass participant.
