Conducting for Singing Teachers

Those of us who teach singing often find ourselves in the position of needing to lead a vocal workshop or a school choir. Whilst we can get a great sound out of singers, being confident with our conducting gesture can make a huge difference to our singers. In this session we’ll work on conducting skills, discuss the mindset needed to be a conductor as well as a vocal coach, and explore some common challenges we might face as a leader of vocal groups.

Joanna Tomlinson is a conductor, singer and teacher of singing and conducting. Following her postgraduate diploma at the Royal College of Music, she has sung as a soloist and with professional choirs, alongside teaching and working as a vocal coach to amateur choirs. Joanna is one of the Principal Conductors of the National Youth Choir (age 9-15, Female/non Binary). She conducts adult choirs Constanza Chorus and the Whitehall Choir in London and has also worked with the BBC Symphony Chorus, Epiphoni and the Royal College of Music Chorus. She has led workshops for the Royal Opera House and Glyndebourne and is on the tutor panel for the Association of British Choral Directors.
