Uppingham School

This intensive and stimulating residential course, with individual mentoring and focused tuition, is aimed at singing teachers with at least four years’ teaching experience.

There will be studio mentored teaching work as well as group sessions, including a tag night with team teaching by the mentors, and a question and answer forum, all held in the brand-new music faculty at Uppingham School.

The format of the course gives you a unique opportunity to work one to one with experienced teachers who will facilitate, encourage and develop your teaching skills and abilities:

Liza HobbsLiza Hobbs

Liza Hobbs teaches at the Royal College of Music Junior Department and at Aberystwyth MusicFest Summer School, and has taught in the past at such places as Millennium Performing Arts, Morley College and the Actors Centre. She has a private practice in London and in mid-Somerset where she now lives. She trained at Trinity College of Music and worked as a chorister at the Royal Opera House and for the Ambrosian Singers and London Voices as well as performing as a soloist in classical concerts and recitals, in West End musicals, pantomime, Music Hall, cabaret and dance bands.

Christopher Jennings

Christopher Jennings studied with Hervey Alan and Henry Cummings, giving recitals and concerts while working in local government, before doing post-graduate study at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where he studied singing with John Mitchinson, and  the teaching of singing with Beatrice Unsworth. He now teaches from his home in North Somerset, and many of his students have been accepted for further study at national music colleges and are developing promising careers.

Linda Hutchison

Linda Hutchison is a singing teacher, lecturer and vocal rehabilitation coach involved in the multi-disciplinary world of voice. She teaches at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, working with both singers and actors. She has taught on the Royal Academy of Music’s post-graduate Musical Theatre course and is a guest tutor at the Irish College of Music Theatre, Dublin. Privately she works with a wide range of professionals from the classical world, musical theatre and jazz. Linda is Vocal Rehabilitation Coach at the Lewisham Voice Clinics, Lewisham University Hospital. She is co-author with Dr Ron Morris of If In Doubt, Breathe Out!, a book on breathing and support for singing based on the Accent Breathing Method.

Penelope Price Jones

Penelope Price Jones worked as a voice mentor on the Certificate of Teaching run by the ABRSM before becoming Teacher Training Director for AOTOS, developing this annual teacher training course and the access course for aspiring vocal teachers. During this time she was involved with the European Voice Teachers Leonardo project, running the European Vocal Pedagogy week in Marlborough in 2010. She is an adjudicator member of the British and International Federation of Festivals, and an elected Deputy on their Adjudicator Council. She teaches at her home in Devizes, Wiltshire, where a new studio with green roof and lovely acoustics has given her new enthusiasm, and is a visiting teacher at Worcester College, Oxford. She was a scholarship holder at the Royal Academy of Music in London, studying with Marjorie Thomas, Thomas Hemsley and Paul Hamburger. She was made an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in 1998.

Venue

Located in the heart of the country, and with easy links to London and all parts of the UK by road, rail and air, Uppingham School is the perfect location for us. Set in the small market town of Uppingham amid the rolling hills of Rutland, the school benefits from historic and beautiful buildings plus modern state-of-the-art facilities

Accommodation is in the school’s pleasant and spacious boarding houses. Meals are freshly prepared on site by the school’s own team of chefs, and served in each house dining room; morning coffee and afternoon tea are also included.

Price

The price is just £390 and this fee includes all tuition, a single room and full board: Monday dinner; Tuesday breakfast, lunch and dinner; Wednesday breakfast, lunch and dinner; and Thursday breakfast. The course begins from 4pm on the Monday and we end around noon on the Thursday.
