Janice Thompson has been working extensively as a singing teacher and vocal coach for over 30 years, mostly in the private sector, but also as a visiting teacher for schools and education colleges. From her base in Swindon, Wiltshire, she has helped hundreds of singers of all ages and levels to success in performance, grade and diploma examinations, festivals, music and drama colleges and vocal careers. More recent developments include adjudicating and the preparation of introductory singing workshops for adults.
Janice qualified as a LRAM singing teacher whilst studying at the Royal Academy of Music with Mary Makower. She also holds an MA in Arts Management from City University, an honours degree in Humanities (Music and Psychology) and an ATCL Pianoforte Teaching Diploma. Her ongoing professional development has included courses in anatomy and physiology, Alexander Technique, Vocal Process Courses, Meribeth Dayme's Core Singing Teacher(TM) Certification Course in May 2010 and, most recently the BVA Accent Method Course. Her interest in vocal rehabilitation takes her from time to time to observe in the ENT department in Swindon.
Since 2004 Janice has held the position of Artistic Director of the JTPTrust, a Swindon-based vocal educational charity which offers singing and performance opportunities to local children and young people. In this capacity she has masterminded many concerts and showcases as well as directing a wide variety of operas and musicals, including the commissioned Youth Opera 'Brunel:The Little Man in the Tall Hat' (Betty Roe) for the 2006 South West Brunel Bi-Centenary Celebrations. She is presently involved in preparations for the project 'Swindon the Opera' which is in receipt of a £60,000 grant from the Big Lottery Jubilee Millions Fund.
Janice has been a member of AOTOS for many years. She has presented papers and demonstrations on working with young developing voices (in particular, boys) for both AOTOS and the BVA.
Janice is married with three adult children, and two small grandchildren. She is has recently been involved in the recording of songs and instrumental pieces of the late composer Nigel P Draycott and in performing works of the composer Betty Roe.
