South West Area 2022 Professional Development Day
Crossing Genres – Bel Canto to Jazz
with Helen Porter
Sunday 20 March 2022
Creative Innovation Centre, Taunton
How do you teach a jazz song effectively? Jazz is a specific genre which can be challenging for teachers who have come from a classic music background with no real experience of the jazz genre. Having trained as a classical musician herself, Helen understands only too well the journey that has to be made to adapt vocal techniques for singing jazz repertoire, as well as the stylistic elements involved.
The day will be part presentation, part interaction. Helen will offer practical tips on what does and does not define the art of jazz singing. She will take us through the language of jazz including scat and improvisation, vocal colour and text delivery, the importance of rhythm and understanding swing notation. Helen has had conversations with the examination boards and she is eager to share her thoughts on interpretation. During the afternoon there will be an informal master class session where Helen will show how to pull all these elements together to make an effective jazz performance and there will time for questions and discussion.
