Sight Singing for Pop Vocalists
With Emer McParland

Sunday 21 April 2024

Djanogly Recital Hall, University of Nottingham, Nottingham NG7 2RD

This day will be a practical, hands-on (and voices-on!) workshop all about sight singing for Pop Music vocalists, taking you from the very beginnings of sight singing a piece of music through to following a vocal chart and finding out what everything means. You will work with original vocal parts (and backing tracks) as well as look at a range of popular songs and discover how to sight sing them. The day will also include looking at common sight singing problems and their solutions, all in a relaxed and comfortable environment that unlocks the mystery of sight singing.

Emer McParland is a hugely experienced and highly regarded UK based session singer, solo vocal performer, and vocal tutor.

She began her movie soundtrack career singing on ‘Sleepy Hollow’ and most recently, Disney’s live-action version of ‘Cinderella’ and she is the solo Big Band vocalist on Marvel’s ‘Avengers:Endgame’. She has been involved in live concert performances of films such as ‘Independence Day’, ‘Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone’, and ‘Alice In Wonderland’ with Danny Elfman.

As a backing vocalist Emer has worked with artists such as Björk, Kylie Minogue, Tom Fletcher (McFly), Mika, Jarvis Cocker, Andrea Bocelli and Dame Shirley Bassey.

She has appeared as guest soloist with several orchestras including The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, The Hallé, Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, The BBC Concert Orchestra and The RTÉ Concert Orchestra (Ireland), and she is the guest female soloist with the BBC Big Band.

Alongside her live performances Emer has taught at several London-based Contemporary Commercial Music schools including The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP – Head of Vocals) and Vocal Tech (now BIMM) where she has written and delivered courses up to degree level on topics such as Sight Singing, Voice Production, and Stage and Studio Craft.
