Paul Farrington

Paul studied Voice & Piano at the Birmingham School of Music (now Royal Birmingham Conservatoire) and after graduating sang for many years in recital and oratorio, as well as being a member of Canon Hill Opera, which is now known as Birmingham Opera Company. He combined performing with work as both stage and musical director at Guildford School of Acting and Birmingham School of Acting and has now specialised for more than 35 years in working with the solo voice.

He trained and studied with Jo Estill, and was among the first in the world to be licensed as a ‘Vanguard’ by Jo herself, awarded in recognition as a pioneer presenter of Jo’s work in the UK.

He is uniquely qualified as a specialist vocal coach: he has been Clinical Vocal Consultant at University Hospital Birmingham for more than 20 years and is an associate with a number of Harley Street ENT practices.

Having taught at the Royal Academy of Music, Birmingham Conservatoire and Royal Welsh Conservatoire, he is now Vocal Health & Technique Consultant at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, and vocal coach to some of the world’s foremost opera and concert performers. Internationally recognised as one of the foremost vocal trouble-shooters in the business, he is in demand for workshops and teaching worldwide.

He was a core member of the Samling Foundation Masterclass team from 1997 to 2012, and also participated in many of Samling’s Outreach projects with schools and choirs in the North East of England. He has worked with the casts of numerous West End musicals and given live broadcast masterclasses on Spanish TV’s Operación Triunfo (The X Factor). He has led masterclasses with organisations as diverse as the Choir of New College Oxford and BABS & LABS, the Barbershop Associations in the UK, as well as presenting courses and workshops throughout Europe, Asia and Australasia.

He has been vocal consultant to the Charles Wood Summer School in Armagh, NI since 2001. He has an open invitation to work with the Lindemann Young Artist Program at the Metropolitan Opera, the Juilliard School of Music in New York, and the Studio of Frankfurt Opera. For 11 years he was principal tutor for the New Zealand Opera school and he returns annually to present a series of courses and workshops in Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington.

He continues his role as principal vocal coach at Göteborgs Operan, Sweden, and has been coach on a new production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame for the 2018/19 season, as well as Il barbiere di Siviglia, Das Rheingold, Le nozze di Figaro, Madama Butterfly and Cav & Pag. In March 2013 he was appointed as Professor of Opera & Vocal Pedagogy at the Norwegian National Academy of the Arts in Oslo, Norway and also coaches for Norwegian Opera Oslo.

He was vocal coach and music consultant to the cast of the movie Quartet directed by Dustin Hoffman, coaching Dame Maggie Smith, Pauline Collins, Sir Tom Courtenay and Billy Connolly, and more recently was vocal, piano and conducting coach and music consultant on the Oscar-nominated The Theory of Everything for Working Title pictures.

Guest coach engagements for 2018 and 2019 include: Bernstein School of Music Theatre in Bologna, University of Central Florida, Royal Danish Opera Copenhagen, Sydney and Brisbane Conservatoires, and Singapore Academy of Fine Arts. He maintains his twice-yearly visits as Vocal Consultant at the New National Theatre Tokyo, where he continues to attempt to learn Japanese!
