Foundation Course

Booking for this course has now closed.

Newly developed in response to demand, this is the essential practical course in how to teach singing.

The Foundation Course aims to combine our central tenet of teacher training – you teach a pupil in the studio alongside an experienced mentor – with the opportunity to study the facets of teaching singing common to all genres: an apprenticeship scheme.

The course is divided into three weekends, each with two studio-based mentorship sessions per student and a range of topics covered, including:

  • core ingredients of anatomy
  • suggested vocal technical essentials
  • vocal development
  • musicianship
  • teaching techniques
  • lesson and curriculum planning
  • first repertoire
  • performance and communication
  • the practicalities of setting up a business.

Topics and tutors for the three weekends.

In between the three weekends, you will be asked to:

  • read from your tailored reading list
  • do some practical written work
  • studio observe experienced teachers in your area
  • develop your own teaching.

The course deliberately builds in time between weekend sessions to allow you to develop and improve your skills during the course.

Our aim is to enable you, as a new teacher, to start on your profession with a degree of confidence and experience, and to facilitate your learning and development as a teacher. You will be helped by the support of experienced AOTOS members, whose philosophy is to encourage ongoing professional development, openness and the sharing of ideas.
