Richard Stokes

Richard Stokes will need little introduction to members of AOTOS. There are surely few of us who do not own at least one of his illuminating books on poetry and the song repertoire. He has published books on German, French and Spanish song, and his singing translations of Berg’s Wozzeck and Lulu, and Wagner’s Parsifal have met with critical acclaim. He is Visiting Professor of Lieder at the Royal Academy of Music and has given many lectures on song at St John’s Smith Square, the Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Edinburgh and Aldeburgh Festivals, Dartington and the Söngskólinn in Reykjavík. Further masterclasses are planned during 2009 in China and South Korea. Amongst his most recent publications is “The Book of Lieder”, and copies of this (at a special reduced price) will be on sale at the conference.

Ed Blake

Ed Blake, BSc, MSc (Physiotherapy), OCPPP is an Australian trained physiotherapist who has made a speciality of the diagnosis and treatment of performance based injuries. He is director and head clinician of Physio Ed Medical, based in Harley Street, and is associated with University College London in research projects relating to muscle tension dysphonia and support mechanisms. He will be bringing with him to the conference his ultrasound equipment which, with the help of a projector and screen, will allow us all to see exactly how the muscles move and work during the act of support.

Mary King

Mary King will already be familiar to members from her past presentations at conferences. She has had a uniquely varied career both as a performer of all kinds of music, including much opera and contemporary music as well as forays into the world of the musical, and as an educator and teacher. She was for eleven years in charge of “The Knack” – a performance skills course run by ENO’s Bayliss programme, and since the autumn of 2006 has been Head of the Vocal Studio at London’s South Bank Centre. Her work for television includes acting as panel member for both “Operatunity” and “Musicality”. More recently she has co-authored (with Tony Legge) “The Singer’s Handbook”, and is in the middle of producing the Boosey Voice Coach series. She is Head of Singing at Millennium Dance 2000, and will be bringing some of her students from the school with her to the conference.
